Malpais

18-08-2009

SUMMARY:
Malpais has a variety of scenic spots, most notably the small bays, the lake "Lago Disparsé" and the hills with the many different panoramic views. In areas with a more dense cover of vegetation there is a good chance of spotting binás. The paths are easily accessible. Some entrances or paths are chained off. For access to the area beyond the chain, contact Foundation Stichting Curaçao (Stichting Uniek Curaçao).

Note: The areas around the dam and the trails that pass through dense vegetation are very sensitive. The fauna should not be disturbed as this area is home to the rare Biná deer. Disturbing the flora could lead to soil erosion. Off-road mountain biking and motorised vehicles are very damaging to the fauna and flora. Dogs should be held on a leash.

Walking/Hiking trails
Malpais offers many different trails such as the Biná route, the Seru Jamanica route, the Boka Unico route and the
Papaya route. The bays and beaches that do not lie on the route are definitely also worth a visit. From north to south you'll find Playa Paradis, Pestbaai (due to its intimacy also named bachelor’s beach) and Boka Unico, which are rarely visited hence pleasantly quiet.

Duration: 3 hours.
Distance: about 8 km.

Other recreation
Horseback riding and mountain biking.
