Car rental on Curacao

24-07-2009

The minimum age to rent a vehicle in Curacao is 23. (One or two companies have special arrangements for interns under the age of 23). Most car rental companies require you to have held a valid drivers’ licence for a minimum of two years.  A surcharge may apply for renters aged between 23 and 25 (approximately NAFL 10 per day). Most of the car rental companies have offices at the airports.  In addition more and more hotels now offer car hire. Rates can differ considerably, so it is very important that you check carefully what the price includes. The larger international car rental companies normally quote for a basic car hire package which excludes insurance, VAT and other general charges.

Tips on hiring a car in Curacao:

  • Read the small print carefully.
  • Examine the car meticulously for scratches and small dents and report these to the hire company if you see any.
Ensure they make a note of these before you leave the premises, otherwise you may be held liable for damages
    not caused by you.
  • Car rental companies normally quote for a basic car hire package which excludes insurance.
Own risk is $300 with Loss Damage Waiver costing from an extra NAF10 – NAF25 per day.
  • Car rental is also available from private individuals. Although this is a cheaper option, we advise against this as often
the insurance is restricted to private use only and not for rental purposes.
  • Always ensure that you are given a green card (or copy) when renting a vehicle.
  • Some car rental companies on the island do rent vehicles to persons younger than 23 years of age, so it's worth asking.
