Curacao Historical and Cultural Tour
Summary: Visit some of Curacao's historical sites and enjoy Curacao's diverse art and culture.
Next you’ll visit Landhuis Rooi Catootje, not far from the heart of Willemstad. This beautifully restored land house is owned by the Mongui Maduro Foundation and formerly by the members of the Maduro family whose local roots can be traced back for hundreds of years. It is home to a small museum of colonial artifacts and contains an extensive library of historical publications and documents detailing Curacao’s colorful history.

From here you’ll head to the Art and Nature Inn. Built for Shell’s executives in the 1920’s, this large home has been converted into 14 small apartment units. The owner, Geerdine Kuijpers, has spent the last 40 years turning the building into a work of art. Mosaics cover the walls inside and out, and even the furnishings are custom made artworks. Visitors are amazed what can be done with shells, pebbles, and driftwood, among other mediums. These days Geerdine’s daughter is helping out as the Art and Nature Inn continues to evolve into the future.

After an authentic Curacaon lunch (This lunch is optional and not included in the price) your guide will take you to Landhuis Jan Kok, just outside the quaint town of Willibrordus. Built in 1654, Jan Kok is the oldest land house on Curacao. In 1784 most of the original structure was lost to neglect and fire; reconstruction began in the early 1800’s. The main house sits on a ridgeline, offering panoramic views of the flamingo reserve, the former salt flats at St. Marie, and the neighboring land houses. In the late 1800’s Jan Kok’s salt mining was a profitable venture, employing more than 100 laborers. These days it hosts a standing exhibition of paintings from famous local artist Nena Sanchez.

From here you’ll take a stroll around Daaibooi Bay, a quiet reserve and an excellent place to spot tropical birds, including pink flamingos, herons, parakeets, and terns. There’s also a small sandy beach, for those wanting to take a dip.
Before heading back to Willemstad, we’ll take you to see one more local artist. There are several great ones to choose from, so our pick varies from one week to another. Much of the work you’ll see is for sale, so you may want to bring your wallet.
The tour ends and you will be returned to your accommodation, cruise terminal or location of choice.
